My initial reaction when I first entered Second Life was a good one. In terms of online interaction, I myself play a lot of online gaming, including World of Warcraft. That being said, the whole concept of a bunch of people interacting online isn’t new, however one is difference I notice is the way everyone interacts. For example, in WoW (World of Warcraft), all the players must work together using their magic/fighting skills to defeat enemys; a very fantasy based world. However in SL, it seems people work in different ways, creating textures and objects as opposed to killing a giant dragon. I find that whole concept very neat. One thing I found in common of the two is that clothes are very important to ones avatar. In WoW, the clothes you wear give you plus points to your stats, and in SL they help define who you are in that world. Overall, even though I’m still learning the intricate details of SL, I feel comfortable in the environment. -Spike
When I initially downloaded SL I wasn't to crazy about it. This was my second time downloading the program. So far I am enjoying myself. This is a new thing for me but I'm adjusting. The funny thing is I play the Sims and it reminds me of that but to me on the Sims I have more interaction with the game. It's true objects can be built in SL but with the Sims I feel there is more to do because they work, clean, sleep, etc. Also, there is the option to control more than one person. I'm not saying that SL is horrible I just have to get used to the program. I am not a close-minded person so I am open to learning more about SL.
Initially when I used Second Life, I was excited because I am a fan of any kind of virtual environment. When I loaded it up, I wasn't so crazy about the way the avatars moved and some of the unrealistic things that happen as far as physics are concerned, such as hands going through the waist when your avatar puts its hands on them. I was, however, very impressed with the way the environment looked when I turned the graphics up.
I think the overall concept is really a great idea because of the ways the users can interact with the environment, building on land and personalizing themselves online through avatars. I'm excited to see what I will learn about it this semester.
Initial reactions to second life My Initial reactions to second life- I really wasn't sure what to expect from this class. Second life seems like an up and coming technology and not many people knew much about it so I thought I would try the class out. When I first discovered the class would be based in an alternate online universe, I was pleased. It is a very interesting way to teach a class and learn in a class. I think this way of teaching is going to get alot more popular in the future. I have already had a few of my friends create avatars on second life. I really like the way we get to create out own avatar and the many ways we can personalize the looks and clothing. I also like the way we can interact with friends, teachers and also strangers in many different environments and we can do this by chating in a public chat forum, chatting personally one- on- one, or talking on a headset. I visited a few other places other than the towson innovation lab. There seems to be a place for everything and you can purchase things in most places which is really neat. I also talked to someone on there and found it interesting that she made a living selling things in second life.
